When the People you Love Don’t Love Hooping

Let’s face it: no matter how much joy and sunshine we radiate while showing off our love for these beautiful plastic circles – not everyone will understand it. Although, it seems to cut the deepest when the ones we love do not support or even appreciate the time, effort, passion and love we put into the art of hula hoop dance and fitness.

Do you ever find yourself spending more time seeking out hoop companions and praise for the new trick you just nailed after weeks of trial and error on the internet?

You are not alone – there are tons of hoopers just like you who can find a more sturdy support on the internet through social media outlets. I highly recommend that if you do not find much support in your life for hooping to seek out an alternative source to lift your spirits and to not only understand you – but appreciate you as well. Now, we cannot just replace our real life for a virtual reality, otherwise we would never get any actual hooping done!

A good way to bring up issues you have with an un-supportive family member and/or spouse is to hold a meeting (almost like a reverse intervention) – this has to feel official and show that you are very serious. Due to the fact that everyone will have a different situation with incomparable underlying factors, you will have to find the best time and place that will be suitable to hold this meeting. It is a good idea to do your homework and even have visual aids such as pictures and videos ready to use in hopes it will engage them more. Incorporate the physical and mental benefits that come with hooping that are proven. Also, try to incorporate some success stories (and maybe a few of your personal inspirations) so, that you can show that it is possible to succeed in life as a professional hoop dancer/teacher and/or the fact that many women and men that have used the hula hoop to make an imperative, positive impact on their health.

If you are reading this and thinking to yourself that this will never work or that you already tried something similar with no changes, do not feel discouraged; the first smart hoop wasn’t built in a day! ;)

With all seriousness though, this may take some time. There are so many issues that come along with unsupportive loved ones concerning our hooping world. For example: if you are trying to explain why you spend X amount of dollars on hula hoops, try to use an example of something they put money into even though it doesn’t seem exactly necessary to you (smart phones, game consoles, hunting equipment, fancy kitchenware, ect.). Using example that the person can relate to or better understand can make all the difference in some cases.

Lastly, please never let people discourage you.

If hula hooping makes you happy, improves your life (physically and mentally), helps you grow as a person, and gives you a profound sense of purpose – then why would you let another person’s uneducated opinions on the subject make you stop spinning? Now, I am not saying this will be a hoop in the park, but you are strong and you are equipped with the knowledge and passion to push forward. You are a beautiful unique hooper that is a part of a huge worldwide community that understands, loves, and appreciates YOU! So, do not stop shining and don’t give up on the unsupportive loved ones, with some elbow grease you might just change their minds!
